Tell us about yourself and what brought you to the North Shore ?

I grew up in Marblehead and went to college in Maine. I have always loved the change of seasons in New England and am so grateful to call the North Shore my home. After 10 years commuting into Boston and working as a Corporate Wellness Specialist, I gave up the city job and began the best career I could ever imagine - being a mom. Three kids and two dogs later, being a mom is still my greatest accomplishment.

What brought you to yoga ?

I had studied and worked in the fitness and wellness industry for many years, and I have always been fascinated by the mind-body connection. Yoga enriched my understanding of the power of being present and the role mindfulness plays in our daily lives. Yoga helped me stay fit and find “bliss,” and my yoga mat became my sanctuary. For 90 minutes each day, I knew that no matter how crazy life was, I could find balance. Eventually my practice expanded into a lifestyle, a mindful and balanced way of living, one breath at a time.

Why did you want to become a yoga teacher ?

My passion for yoga became my calling, my dharma: “ that thing that you do, after your day job, in your free time, too early in the morning, too late at night. That thing you read about, write about, think about all the time. That thing you do when you’re all alone and there’s no one to impress, nothing to prove, no money to be made, simply a passion to pursue. That’s it! That’s your thing. That’s your heart, your guide. That’s the thing you must, must do .” ~ upliftedvibrations.com.

Yoga is my “thing,” and I want nothing more than to pass that passion on to the community at Solstice/Empower and beyond. I hope to teach skills on the mat that make a measurable difference off the mat. I believe we are all sharing in this life together, and the tradition of yoga offers us tools to stress less, smile more, untangle physical and emotional knots, and witness ourselves and each other without judgment.

What are some things/people ... for which you are grateful?

I am incredibly grateful for family. Family and yoga have always felt very connected to me. A supportive husband and vibrant, inspiring children bring out the best in me. I am infinitely grateful as well for my “yoga” family - both teachers and students alike. The communities at Solstice and Empower inspire me daily. I am also grateful to be of service and give back. And finally, I am grateful for long walks with my dog, sunny days at the beach, fall foliage, snowy hikes in the woods, and dark chocolate (I’m a bit of an addict).

When do you teach at Solstice/Empower ?

I teach at Empower Mondays 9:00-10:30 a.m. and Thursdays 6:00-7:30 p.m.

I teach at Solstice Mondays 12:00 -1:00 p.m., Tuesdays 9:00-10:15 a.m. and Fridays, 9:15-10:30 a.m.

As a teacher, I favor a vigorous yet peaceful practice, integrating the best elements of power yoga, teaching stability to foster mobility, and allowing space to explore anatomical precision and philosophical inspiration. My classes consist of a dynamic and powerful flow that emphasize creativity, strength, flexibility, and balance.

I have been inspired by so many teachers and styles over the years, but I still find my greatest inspiration from the students that step onto their mats each day and commit to themselves.

Share a quotation and/or message that inspires you ?

My yoga journey has been guided by Patanjali's quote, " When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds.Your mind transcends limitations, your conscious expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be. ”

6 Myths of Yoga

pexels-photo-374694.jpg

1.  Yoga is only for the flexible.
Do you know how many times we hear "I can't do yoga, I can't even touch my toes!"  Stiff?  YOU NEED YOGA.  Actually, everyone needs yoga.  If you are bendy, great.  Yoga will make you even more supple.  Tight & Stiff?  Yoga will loosen you up.  Somewhere in the middle?  Yoga will strengthen and lengthen.  Recovering from an injury?  Modify and take it easy, but yoga's healing powers are pretty amazing too!

2.  Yoga is not challenging.
We know there are a lot of athletes and Type-A's out there that think yoga is for sissies.  Come see for yourself...Power Yoga is tough!  You will bend, twist, balance and sweat.  You will work muscles and reach places in your body that haven't touched in a long time.  And we guarantee you will be challenged!  Whether you are new to yoga, or a veteran...whether you are an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just getting into a fitness program, yoga will meet you where you are and bring additional strength, balance, and flexibility to your life.

3.  Yoga is too challenging.
Just like we get the athletes that think yoga is not challenging, we hear from many more people who think they are not fit, flexible, "skinny", young or strong enough to take yoga classes.  Unless your doctor says you should not practice yoga for certain reasons, we can guarantee you will benefit from yoga classes no matter how out of shape, stiff, or weak you THINK you may be.  Yoga is for EVERY BODY. All poses can be modified.  We encourage you to go at your own pace.  And, you are welcome to take childs pose during class at ANY TIME.  The key is showing up!

3.  Yoga is boring.
Yoga, Heat, Music, Breath, Peace, Joy.   You won't be bored!  We have the BEST team of teachers, each with their own unique and individual style who mix up their sequences, flow, and playlists with every class.  It's a full experience that will keep you physically challenged (see above) as well as mentally focused.

4.  I need to take a beginners class to start yoga.
Beginners/Basics classes are great if they work with your schedule.  We offer ours on Saturdays & Sundays at 11 am.  These classes will move at a slower pace, and focus more on alignment than a typical class.  However, all our classes are ALL levels, so you will frequently find a brand new person in class next to a person who has been doing yoga for years.  It's all good.  Just follow the class, go at your own pace, modify, and don't do anything that doesn't feel right.  Remember, EVERYONE was a beginner at some point.  We've all been there.  We feel you.  But we also know you will feel so good after class and will love it.  Just go.

5. Yoga is too expensive.
Yoga may be an additional expense but the benefits of yoga will save you money in the long run.  Yoga is really not expensive.  Therapy is expensive.  Doctor visits are expensive.  Medication is expensive.  Health Care and Insurance costs are expensive.  While we can't claim that you will not need therapy, doctor visits, or medication, we can say that most people feel healthier physically and happier when they are practicing yoga, so that the need for extra medical or services can be reduced or avoided.  Yoga is also great for preventing and healing costly injuiries and reducing time and money spent on physical therapy, chiropractic care, etc.  Your physical and mental health is well worth your budget towards yoga.

6.  I don't have time for yoga.
You do have time.  Make time.  Yoga is for your body, yoga is for your mind, yoga is for your soul.  You need to make time for you and your health and well-being so that you can be there for everyone else in your life.  And we don't know how this works, but somehow when you make time for yoga, you find you are more productive at work and home, you are more focuses, more prioritized, and somehow you have MORE time

Feature Teacher Spotlight: Willa Worsfold

FEATURE TEACHER:  WILLA WORSFOLD

Tell us about yourself and what brought you to the North Shore.

We moved from Chicago to Boston in 2004 for my husband's work and to be closer to my side of the family. We moved to the North Shore because we love the good school systems, being close to the water, the expansive system of state parks and open and abundant farmlands.

What/who brought you to yoga?

I came to yoga to heal my chronic back pain after 30 years of running, the birth of my two children, and well, just life!  There was a time when I could not stand up straight or even sneeze with out extreme pain.  I have always been an active athlete - and though I am naturally flexible, I have to work to maintain my physical strength. Yoga gives me the balance of both, of course.

I STAYED with yoga because I really connect with the mindfulness and meditation practices - what this does to enhance my own life and how rewarding it is to teach for the health and benefit of others as well.

Why did you want to become a yoga teacher?

HA.  I did not plan on teaching! I studied extensively with the best teachers in Chicago and then took David Malone's training within a year of moving here simply to advance my personal practice of yoga and meditation, and cultivating my inner wisdom of body and mind.  Then I began teaching children, teens and men - groups that were not specifically targeted in the past, with the intention of introducing the benefits of a strong and peaceful body and mind to them in a safe, comfortable and non-mystical environment. That grew into teaching just about anyone who will listen; I carry my card and hand out practical suggestions in the grocery line. No Joke...ask my embarrassed kids.

Why do you teach now?

When I engage in conversation with old and new students and teachers, field questions on accessing everyday peace for your body and mind, watch you learn and share loving kindness and compassion with those around you, observe your struggles and joys on your mat and glimpse the peace on your face in savanna...THIS is why i continue to teach.  I am also  in love with teaching fund raising events, for the benefit of others; the amount of awareness and funds we can raise together from a room full of generous students is just so delicious. It's people. It's community. It's love.

What is the goal/inspiration of the classes you teach?

I teach an interesting style of vinyasa yoga that blends creative sequencing with mindful alignment cues, to help students find their strength AND softness upon their mats and in the world. My classes tend to be challenging but accessible, intelligent but entertaining, contemplative but conversational. And I love to accompany each class with practical meditational techniques, refreshing alternative music and poetic meditations. Classes always close with a delicious 7-10 minute guided meditation and savanna.

Why do you enjoy leading the Teacher Training Program?  What can trainees expect?

Creating this program has been a wonderful journey and a labor of pure love. It is rich with practice, meditation and self discovery. But it is also a joyful exploration of the nerdy nuts and bolts of all 8 limbs of Yoga, HOW to teach safely and with JOY, Assisting, Sequencing, Voice Training with a pro, anatomical forays inside the yoga bones and muscles, inspirational contributing master teachers, Yin yoga, Astanga Yoga (the original ancient practice), Restorative Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Hot Power Yoga , plus non-heated Vinyasa yoga; All this will continue your lifelong practice of yoga and meditation student AND teacher - if that too is your intention.
Perhaps you will join us as well✌🏼

Days/Times you Teach?

9:15 am Wonderful Warm Wednesdays at Solstice
11 am Mondays Power Yoga + Meditation at Empower Yoga

Classes are a blend of practical meditations and  creative, mindful vinyasa practice

What are some things you grateful for (little things/big things....anything)

family. friends. community. dog walks, poetry and music.  I am particularly grateful to be invited to teach the Solstice RYT 200hr Teacher Training - that level of advancing students' physical and emotional awareness is such a beautiful journey.

A couple Fun Facts about you

What you see is what you get: I'm a pretty open book. And you can see the most of that on instagram! where I like to pair poetry to photography. @yogiwilla, @willaworks. I cook dinner just about every night, and can cook for 1 to 100 with equal ease and joy, and mess ;-)! And yes that accent you hear in NYC, where my family emigrated in the early 1900s from Italy and Slovakia.

Please share a quote or message that inspires you

I am a big fan of Pema Chodron, 80 yr old American Buddhist Monk of the Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. In fact we will be using one of her books in our upcoming Training! "You are the Blue Sky. Everything else...is just the Weather"
